Workplace Organisation – 5’S

Workplace Organisation it does not matter what you call it 5’c or 5’s it’s Workplace Organisation and is one of the easiest yet most effective improvement tools available to us and described by many of the world’s leading improvement Gurus as the foundation for all Business Improvement, some see it as just a housekeeping exercise, which is wrong, it is so much more than just a clean and tidy workplace with the right things in the right place, I’s  about setting the business out to be efficient safe and productive .

This course is delivered in house, and designed to introduce the attendees to first steps of continuous improvement and is based on the requirements of ISO 18404, the course is a blend of theory and practical application

Visual Management

Visual management is one of the many SMART techniques available to us, and is designed, so that anyone entering any workplace, especially those who are totally unfamiliar with the detail of the processes, can very rapidly see what is going on, understand it and see what is under control and what isn’t.

  • Benefits from applying Visual Management
  • Exposes waste so that it can be eliminated and prevented from recurring thereby making the workplace more efficient.
  • Displays trends in Safety, Quality, Cost and Delivery, so as timely corrective actions can be taken.
  • Makes operation standards quicker and easier to understand by all.
  • Clarifies KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators).

The covers the flowing areas

  • Product and process information.
  • Area information, boundaries.
  • Standard work instructions – Standard work charts, etc.
  • Performance information – tracking against key metrics.
  • Status of current issues and improvement activities.
  • Schedules of maintenance, calibration or other support activities.

Visual controls aim to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of a process by making the steps in that process more visible. One of the theories behind visual controls, is that if something is clearly visible, in plain sight, it is easy to remember and keep at the front of the mind.

Visual controls are designed to make the control and management of a company as simple as possible. This means making problems, abnormalities, or deviations from standards visible to everyone. When these deviations are visible and apparent to all, corrective action can be taken to immediately correct these problems.

Standard Work Instructions

Standard Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures or whatever you wish to call them must be designed to determine the safest BEST possible way to carry out any operation in your business.

SOP’s ensure a business has predictable end results in the three key areas of Quality, Cost and Delivery, these being the things your customers, both internal and external not just expect but now demand.

The development and use of SOPs is an integral part of any successful quality system. It also provides individuals with the information to perform a job/task properly and drives consistency in the quality and integrity of a product or process through consistency.

SOP’s can also be used as a part of a personnel training program, since they provide detailed work instructions. When historical data is being evaluated for current use, SOP’s can be valuable for reconstructing project activities.

In addition, SOP’s are frequently used for training and by inspectors when auditing procedures. Ultimately, the benefits of a valid SOP will reduce effort, and improve quality

Business Measures – KPI’s

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) help businesses understand how well they are performing in relation to their business goals and objectives. This one day course is designed to enable the attendees to give meaning to data, to able to collect, collate and report on performance ain a clear and accurate manner – As Peter Drucker said many years ago “IF YOU CAN’T MEASURE IT, YOU CAN’T MANAGE IT.”
